The Full Story

headshot of Grace Stroup, site owner,

Hi — I’m Grace Stroup, a writer, editor, and storyteller drawn to narratives about family, place, tradition, and the ways we carry our histories with us.

I hold a BA in English and Religious Studies with a concentration in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I’m currently pursuing my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the College of Charleston. My fiction and essays have been published in literary magazines nationwide, and I’m at work on a novel exploring family, inheritance, and coming of age in the modern South.

In addition to my writing, I work as a freelance editor, offering developmental editing, line editing, and proofreading services for authors, nonprofits, and creative projects. I’ve previously held editorial roles with swamp pink and The Carolina Quarterly, produced podcasts, and written direct mail for political campaigns — experiences that have sharpened my ability to shape clear, authentic, emotionally resonant narratives across mediums.

I also bring several years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and communications. As an Institutional Partnerships Officer for KickStart International, I drafted grant proposals, donor reports, and narrative-driven materials advocating for social and economic issues across East Africa. That work deepened my belief in the power of storytelling to connect people, mobilize resources, and drive meaningful change.

I grew up near the Potomac River, just outside Washington, D.C., in an 1860s farmhouse. Raised by a father from a small Louisiana town and a mother who moved from state to state, my own origin story stretches across geographies, shaped by intersections of place, family, and tradition. It’s no surprise that my writing often seeks to unravel those very intersections.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me hiking, cooking new recipes, practicing yoga, or jumping into the Atlantic near my home on James Island, South Carolina. These spaces — and the people who fill them — continue to fuel both my life and my work.

Thank you for visiting my site. I invite you to explore my portfolio and editing services, and reach out if you'd like to connect
